2D to 3D becomes easy with Tinkercad

Laoban tutorial

 1. Prepare Your Image

Use a Simple Image: Start with a high-contrast, black-and-white image (e.g., logos, silhouettes). Complex or shaded images may not convert well.

Convert to SVG:

Vector Tools: Use tools like Inkscape (free) or Adobe Illustrator to trace the image and save it as an SVG file.

In Inkscape: Import your image, go to Path > Trace Bitmap, adjust settings, and export as SVG.

Online Converters: If you don’t have vector software, use free online tools like Convertio or Online-Convert to generate an SVG (results may vary).

2. Import the SVG into Tinkercad

This is the essential part for 2D to 3D. Open Tinkercad and create a new project.

Click Import > Choose a File and select your SVG.

Adjust the Scale if needed (Tinkercad may resize the SVG automatically).

Click Import.

3. Convert to 3D

After importing, the SVG will appear as a flat 2D shape. To make it 3D:

Select the imported shape.

Use the Height slider (white cube on top) to extrude the shape into a 3D model.

Adjust the thickness as desired.

4. Refine the Model

Combine Shapes: Add other Tinkercad shapes (e.g., cubes, cylinders) to enhance your design.

Hollow Out Areas: Use the Hole tool to create cutouts if needed.

Scale and Position: Resize or rotate the model using the handles.

5. Export for 3D Printing

Select your model and click Export.

Choose .STL or .OBJ format for 3D printing.

Tips for Better Results

Simplify Complex SVGs: Reduce the number of nodes/paths in your SVG file to avoid Tinkercad errors.

Check Dimensions: Ensure your model’s size matches your 3D printer’s build volume.

Group Objects: If using multiple parts, group them (Ctrl + G) before exporting.
